Wood Flooring FAQs

Wood Flooring FAQs

1. What is engineered wood flooring?

Engineered wood flooring consists of a real hardwood top layer bonded to multiple layers of plywood or HDF (high-density fiberboard). This structure provides enhanced stability, making it less prone to warping or expansion compared to solid wood.

2. Can engineered wood flooring be sanded and refinished?

Yes, but the number of times depends on the thickness of the top hardwood layer (wear layer):

  • 4mm+ veneer – Can be sanded 2-3 times
  • 2mm-3mm veneer – Can be lightly sanded once
  • Less than 2mm veneer – Not suitable for sanding

3. Is engineered wood flooring suitable for underfloor heating?

Yes! Engineered wood is compatible with underfloor heating because of its stable, multi-layered construction. However, always check the manufacturer’s recommendations and ensure the surface temperature does not exceed 28°C.

4. What’s the best way to install engineered wood flooring?

Engineered wood can be installed using different methods:

  • Floating Floor – Quick and easy, installed over underlay without glue or nails
  • Glue-Down – A permanent installation method for a firm and stable fit (We recommend 18mm and above)
  • Nail/Staple Down – Best for wooden subfloors, securing planks in place (We recommend 18mm and above)

5. Does engineered wood flooring need an expansion gap?

Yes, always leave a 10-15mm expansion gap around the room's perimeter to allow for natural movement.

6. Why Do You Need an Expansion Gap for Engineered Wood Flooring?

An expansion gap is essential when installing engineered wood flooring to allow for natural movement due to changes in temperature and humidity. Wood naturally expands and contracts as moisture levels fluctuate, and without a 10-15mm gap around the perimeter, the planks could push against walls, causing buckling, lifting, or warping over time. The expansion gap ensures the floor has enough space to adjust without compromising its structure or appearance. This gap is typically hidden beneath skirting boards or beading, maintaining a seamless finish while protecting the integrity of your flooring.

7. How do I clean and maintain engineered wood flooring?

  • Sweep or vacuum regularly to remove dust and debris
  • Use a slightly damp mop with a pH-neutral wood cleaner (avoid excess water and always check the label on the back of the bottle to ensure it is compatible  to your floor)
  • Place felt pads under furniture to prevent scratches
  • Avoid steam cleaners, as heat and moisture can damage the wood

8. Is engineered wood flooring waterproof?

  • No, while engineered wood is more moisture-resistant than solid wood, it is not waterproof. Spills should be cleaned up immediately to prevent damage. For waterproof options, consider vinyl flooring.

9. Can I install engineered wood flooring in kitchens and bathrooms?

✔ Kitchens: Yes, but ensure proper care to wipe up spills quickly and use mats in high-moisture areas.
❌ Bathrooms: Not recommended due to prolonged exposure to moisture and humidity.

10. How long does engineered wood flooring last?

With proper care, engineered wood flooring can last 20-30+ years, depending on the thickness of the top layer and maintenance.
